The Summer Reading Challenge has been another great success in Macclesfield this year, with over 800 young people taking part. Local MP, David Rutley, visited Macclesfield Library, to celebrate this positive achievement and highlight the importance of libraries in our communities.
David helped present the young people who took part with certificates and gold medals on completing the challenge. He congratulated them on their commitment to reading and was pleased to hear more about how much they enjoyed the challenge. He also thanked the Library's enthusiastic young volunteer team, as well as Vicky Bailey and her Librarian Team, who helped to administer the challenge, for their hard work in making it such a success. This also included promoting the challenge to local young people in ten school visits.
In order to complete the challenge, young people need to read six books, and visit their local library at least six times during the summer holidays. This year's theme was ‘Space Chase’, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
On his visit, David also took the opportunity to meet with library staff and users to hear more about the valued service that the library provides in the local community. As well as books, there is an extensive IT suite and rooms available for hire, all of which helps to ensure that the library can retain its important place in the community and as one of the busiest in the North West.
Speaking after his visit, David said, "The Summer Reading Challenge is a fun and important opportunity to encourage young people to read over the long summer holidays, as well as to celebrate the much-valued role of local libraries in our communities. I was impressed to see how many young people in Macclesfield took part this summer. and pleased that they found it such a rewarding experience. I am very grateful to all those who made this fantastic scheme possible."
