Macclesfield MP David Rutley picked up some life saving first aid tips from St John Ambulance volunteers at the Treacle Market in Macclesfield on Sunday.
The first aid volunteers from the charity were at the market to give Macclesfield residents the chance to learn more about the work of St John Ambulance and the many volunteering opportunities available. Free demonstrations of vital first aid techniques were also on offer throughout the day to equip people with the skills to deal with serious incidents such as choking, severe bleeding, heart attacks and an unconscious casualty.
Barrie Davies from St John Ambulance said, ‘We need volunteers to support our work reducing unnecessary deaths. If you are energetic, reliable and committed to putting the needs of others first, then you can help us be the difference between lives lost and lives saved.
‘Our volunteers play a key role providing first aid training in communities, teaching life saving skills to people and delivering first aid care. All volunteers receive free basic first aid training, as well as the opportunity to cultivate specialised skills to help them in specific roles.’
After meeting the volunteers, David Rutley said, ‘It was good to see St John Ambulance at the Treacle Market. The Cadets taught me some life saving skills that could make a vital difference to someone in need in the future. I hope the open day encourages more people to get involved and join St John Ambulance. The work of their dedicated volunteers is vitally important.’
St John Ambulance has over 40,000 volunteers across the country and teaches around 800,000 people in first aid skills in schools, the workplace and the community every year.
