David Rutley, Member of Parliament of Macclesfield, has given his support to initiatives to encourage children to correctly wash their hands, during a visit to Cutlers, a local cleaning products distribution company based in Bollington.
David met with Paul Whitehead, Director, Iain Bell, Sales Director and John Whitehead, Commercial Director, and the wider team to learn how properly washed hands can improve health and save lives, and how the correct method of hand washing can be taught to young people. The benefits of correct hand washing has also been promoted in Parliament, with cross party support.
Cutlers is a family owned janitorial, cleaning and hygiene products distribution company, with customers predominantly based in the North West. Although it provides services to the leisure, care, facilities management and commerce market sectors, around 45% of its sales are to schools and to children’s nurseries.
The company recognised that good handwashing was a key to the reduction of infection and the transmission of germs, but that most people were unaware of the correct method of hand washing. However, they also found out that young children and those in key stages one and two can be taught correct hand washing as part of the National Curriculum.
The company undertook research with the Health Protection agency and leading skin care products manufacturer Deb Limited and devised Ollie, a cheeky orang-u-tan character who features on Cutler’s bright green soap dispenser and support package. The package includes a hand wash training DVD that was especially commissioned and filmed to convey the message to young children.
Speaking following his visit, David said, “I was very pleased to visit Cutlers, and find out more about the business, and how the products it distributes are helping to provide a cleaner and safer environment. Regular hand washing should be a basic hygienic practice for us all, and I am happy to support the important work which is being done to ensure that the risk of spreading avoidable infections is minimised. I wish Cutlers every success for the future.”
