David Rutley MP at Wincle Primary School

The Cheshire Wildlife Trust is working with primary schools across the Borough to raise environmental awareness on issues such as the importance of peatland in tackling climate change. Macclesfield MP, David Rutley, recently visited Wincle Primary School, in Sutton, to discuss this important issue.

During the visit, David met with Headteacher, Ms Sarah Smith, the Jupiter Class which is made up of year 5 and 6 students, and their teacher Ms Laura Wilson. The students shared with David the work they have been doing on environmental awareness, learning how they can be more sustainable and environmentally friendly in their day to day lives.

David was also impressed to hear how knowledgeable the students were on the vital role peatland plays for our environment. The class raised their concerns about the impact the proposed development on the Danes Moss site would have on the peatland and wildlife habitats in this area. David outlined his focus on prioritising peatland restoration and that he continues to work closely with the Save Danes Moss campaign team and the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, to oppose the proposed plans.

Following the visit, the students have sent letters to a number of organisations and high-profile people, such as Cheshire East Council, Barratts Homes and His Majesty the King. In the letters, they highlighted their environmental concerns and were very pleased to receive a hand-written reply from Sir David Attenborough.

Speaking after the visit, David said “Tackling climate change is a vital priority and raising awareness of this in our local schools is an important initiative. I was impressed to hear the depth of knowledge students had on this topic locally, with the ongoing situation at Danes Moss. I hope the organisations and individuals receiving the students’ letters will take into consideration their important concerns. I will continue to oppose this development and will share the student’s concerns in my discussions when meeting with stakeholders.”
