A group of Macclesfield sixth formers visited the Palace of Westminster recently as part of David Rutley MP’s Parliamentary Induction Day.
During their busy day in Parliament, the ten local students, from All Hallows School, Aquinas College, Tytherington School and Cheadle Hulme School, got to grips with the day to day work of MPs in Westminster. They saw the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, and his Treasury Ministerial Team, answer questions in the House of Commons, and Oral Questions to the Environment Minister, Lord Gardiner of Kimble, in the House of Lords. They also attended sittings of the Home Affairs and Health Select Committees about policing and the NHS.
As well as the Parliamentary process, the students were given a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster, learning more about its history and role in the United Kingdom’s national life. David joined the students in the afternoon for a thorough question and answer session, in which David discussed his work as an MP, and the students reflected on their day in Parliament.
Speaking after the students’ visit, David said, “I was pleased to welcome local students to Parliament once again. The level of engagement they showed, and their enthusiasm for the political process, was very impressive. I was also grateful to have the opportunity to hear their views on a range of important issues. I hope that the students found the day useful and informative, and I look forward to welcoming more Macclesfield students to Parliament on future induction days.”
