Investing in new employees was centre stage as AstraZeneca welcomed thirty new apprentices to the company at an evening event in Macclesfield. This is the largest intake of apprentices to the company in the North West for several years with placements spanning engineering, pharmaceutical manufacturing, IT and human resources.
The young people, who have taken their A levels, will spend between two and four years working in different functions while also continuing their studies. Then they hope to be offered a full time role that will kick start their careers.
Welcoming the young people and their parents, Andy Evans, Head of Macclesfield site said: “We are proud to have you joining us at AstraZeneca. We believe it is important to invest in the future and I believe the future is in this room tonight.”
Macclesfield MP David Rutley added: “The life science industry is a critical part of our economy, both in Macclesfield and across the UK. AstraZeneca is a major player that continues to develop and produce life-saving medicines that make a real difference to patients around the world. I am delighted that the company is embracing the apprentice scheme so enthusiastically. I believe you are joining a company that really makes a difference and that you can be proud of.”
The apprentice scheme is run in conjunction with Cogent Skills the UK body for skills in the science industries. Most of the new recruits will be starting between now and September with most working at Macclesfield and the rest joining at AstraZeneca’s other two sites at Alderley Park and Speke in Liverpool.
