Food and drink from Cheshire was the centre of attention in the Houses of Parliament on 2nd March, as local producers came to Westminster to celebrate Cheshire Food Day.
The event, which was co-sponsored by Member of Parliament for Macclesfield, David Rutley, was attended by a number of food and drink makers from across the county, including Macclesfield Forest based distiller, Forest Gin, who gave out samples of their gin, which was very favourably received by other MPs, their staff and other traders. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rt Hon George Osborne MP, the Environment Secretary, Rt Hon Liz Truss MP, and Cheshire based comedian, John Bishop, also made an appearance, to help promote the event.
There were also representatives from breweries, cheesemakers, millers, honey makers and the National Farmers’ Union, who were showing off their products and bringing their work in Cheshire to the attention of Parliamentarians.
Speaking following the event, David said, “I am delighted to have been able to support Cheshire Food Day, and celebrate the great produce sourced from across our county. As well as tasting fantastic, it is important to remember that food and drink are an important contributor to our local economy. That’s why I was really pleased to be able to welcome Forest Gin from Macclesfield to Parliament. Our local produce has a lot going for it, and I would urge people to try and buy locally wherever possible, and help support our local businesses.”
