Regenerating Macclesfield town centre continues to be a vital task. I am pressing Cheshire East Council to take more urgent action, with M&S closing on Mill Street and the new retail development opening on the Barracks Mill site.
I have worked with the Council in submitting a Levelling Up Fund bid to improve the public realm in Market Place and Chestergate. However, there is much more work to do, following Cheshire East Council’s decision earlier in the year to withdraw an addendum setting out its ambition to invest £5m in the town centre.
The Treacle Market highlights what Macclesfield has to offer. Innovative independent businesses are lifting the hospitality sector and adding to our retail offer. Peaks & Plains’ new Crossings apartments show the potential for in town living.
Macclesfield Town Council is playing its part hosting events, including the recent Spooky Saturday and Step Into Christmas on 26th November.
Cheshire East Council now needs to do more to build momentum. Enhancements to public spaces, beyond recent improvements to Castle Street are vital. The Town Hall needs to become the beating heart of our community. For too long, it has not adequately supported local needs.
Many people have contacted me about access to public toilets. Clearer communication is required about current available options and further progress made with new facilities.
While meeting Marketing Cheshire recently, it’s clear that we need to further promote easy access to Macclesfield and our proximity to stunning countryside. Over the years ahead, opportunities to upgrade the train station will also improve the visitor experience.
There is clear potential for mixed-use development blending retail, leisure, commercial and residential uses in Macclesfield’s unique town centre. It’s time for Cheshire East Council to step up a gear to make it happen working with stakeholders and local businesses.
