MP Visits Thriving Poynton Men in Sheds Group

Poynton’s Men in Sheds group showcased their important work to local MP, David Rutley, during his recent visit to their workshop in Poynton Youth and Community Centre. During the visit, the members explained more about their activities and the recent work they have done to support the local community.

Carl Roscoe, Chairman of the group, showed David around their workshop and other facilities, and introduced him to many of the men who were working on various projects at the time of his visit. The group told David about the recent work they have undertaken to support local community initiatives, including the restoration of a railway truck, which is now a feature on Poynton Green, and a Tombola Drum for East Cheshire Hospice. Group members have also made improvements to the garden at Poynton Youth and Community Centre, by building a new fence and refurbishing a shed.

At the end of his visit, David was honoured to be presented with a personalised storage box made by group members, as a memento of his visit.

Started by Age UK Cheshire in 2015, the Poynton Men in Sheds project brings together men over the age of fifty in a friendly environment and allows them to share their interests, skills and experiences. By bringing participants together in this way, the scheme aims to re-engage older men with their peers in a space where they can improve their social and emotional wellbeing, and participate in meaningful and productive activities.

The Poynton Men in Sheds group continues to go from strength to strength, with some thirty regular members meeting every Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon. There are now plans to increase opening times as more members join, and further information about the project can be found here: http://www.poyntontowncouncil.gov.uk/social-activities.htm.

The group is now self-funding, and there is a stall outside their workshop from where they display the items they have made for sale. The group’s members have also presented their wares at the Showcase of Services event at Poynton Civic Hall, Poynton Christmas Fest and other local charity events. Local organisations, including Cheshire East Council, Poynton Town Council, and Poynton and District Round Table, have provided much-needed support to help make the group the success it is.

Speaking after his visit David said: “It is great to see first-hand how the group in Poynton is continuing to thrive and grow. I am a keen supporter of local Men in Sheds projects, as they make a real difference in improving the quality of life and health outcomes for older people. I would like to thank Carl, his team and all those in Poynton who have made this group so successful and wish them continued success in the years ahead.”
