David Rutley MP gave nine Macclesfield students the chance to be an MP for the day in Parliament, on 28th October.
The students from Tytherington School, Fallibroome Academy, Poynton High School and Withington Girls’ School, were in the Palace of Westminster for David's Parliamentary Induction Programme, which gives them the chance to experience how Westminster works and put their questions to David directly.
The Macclesfield MP laid on a busy itinerary with the students being taken on a tour of the Houses of Parliament. They also sat in on debates in both the House of Commons and House of Lords. Students also had the chance to listen to the Transport Select Committee discuss the plans for the HS2 project and its implications. In the afternoon, they were able to put questions to David and discuss his work as Macclesfield's MP. During the discussion where a wide range of issues were discussed, there was a lively debate about the voting age at elections.
David said, "It is a pleasure to welcome the students to Westminster. I have been pleased to hold a number of these programmes since becoming an MP, and this was the best attended to date, which was very encouraging. I hope that they enjoyed finding out more about how Westminster works and that the experience will help them both in their studies and in considering future career options. It was great to talk to them and learn more about the current issues concerning young people. I wish them all every success in their studies and future careers"
