Students and teachers from All Hallows Catholic College were joined by local Member of Parliament, David Rutley, at their Fairtrade breakfast.
The event gave pupils an opportunity to realise the wide variety of produce which comes from across the world, and how much people rely on international trade, as well as farmers in Britain, for a nutritious diet. Students felt that the international community do so much for providing them with a balanced diet, that they must also stand up on their behalf for getting fairly rewarded for their hard work.
Speaking at the breakfast, Chen Ji, a member of the Fairtrade Committee at the College said, “As the Fairtrade Committee of a Faith School, we are very happy that we have been able to put our core value of stewardship into action through promoting responsibility in our purchase choices; another core value is having honourable purpose in our daily actions and, as a specialist Business Enterprise College, commercial trade is not an exception to this.
“By encouraging other students to see the beauty and value of Fairtrade products, we hope that they will persuade parents when at the supermarket to choose Fairtrade products which, even if a little more expensive, means a lot to the farmers trying to provide for their families.”
David was impressed with the activity and applauded the College for continuing with this annual event. He said, "It is great to see All Hallows and its dedicated students promoting Fairtrade at their Fairtrade Breakfast once again. The school's Fairtrade Team have developed an enduring reputation for campaigning on this issue. They should be very proud of their efforts.”
