20 years after the appearance of the first Fairtrade products, Macclesfield primary schoolchildren celebrated Fairtrade with their artwork on display at Macclesfield Library from Monday 3rd to Saturday 15th March .
At a Coffee Morning in the Library on Saturday 8th March the children, parents and members of the public were invited to celebrate the benefits of Fairtrade and enjoy the artwork. They were joined by students from All Hallows College, a Fairtrade School.
VIPs in attendance included the Deputy Mayor of Macclesfield Cllr Janet Jackson, the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Cheshire East Cllr Wesley FitzGerald and Mrs Joan McCance and Macclesfield MP David Rutley seen here with some of the young people. He commented:- “Fairtrade is a very important cause, ensuring that people are paid fairly for the work they do and the products they produce in some of the most disadvantaged countries in the world. It makes a real difference to the lives of people in the developing world. I’m pleased to see local residents and local schools backing this cause. I hope more people will be encouraged to buy fair-trade as a result.”
The display and coffee morning were organised by the Macclesfiield Fairtrade Town Group.
