Eleven students from Macclesfield got the chance on 27th October to see a day in the life of a Member of Parliament, when they visited the House of Parliament, for a Parliamentary Induction Programme, hosted by David Rutley.
The students from Tytherington School, Fallibroome Academy and Eaton Bank Academy made the trip down to London for the Programme, which gave them the chance to experience how Westminster works and put their questions to David directly.
The Macclesfield MP arranged a busy itinerary with the students being taken on a tour of the Houses of Parliament, before watching Treasury Questions featuring the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in the House of Commons, and also seeing an ennoblement ceremony in the House of Lords. Students also had the chance to sit in on Committee hearings about the Immigration Bill and countering extremism respectively. In the afternoon, they were able to put questions to David and discuss his work as Macclesfield's MP. During the discussion where a wide range of issues were discussed, there was a lively discussion about mental health support for young people and the ongoing regeneration of Macclesfield town centre.
David said, "It was great to welcome the students to Westminster. It has been a pleasure to host a number of these programmes since becoming an MP, and this was the best attended to date, which was good to see. I hope that they enjoyed finding out more about how Westminster works and that the experience will help them both in their studies and their future career choices. I really enjoyed talking to them all and gaining a better insight into the issues that were important to them. I would like to thank them all for making the trip and wish them every success in their studies."
