Ahead of this year's Macclesfield Sheepdog Trials on the weekend of 3rd - 4th August, local MP, David Rutley, joined local farmer James Gilman, for a training session with his dog, Bob.
David visited James at his farm in Bosley. On his visit, James explained more about the considerable skill required to compete in sheepdog trials, with the dogs requiring many months and years of training to be able to take part in trial events. David was pleased to be able to witness the results of these efforts in action as he enjoyed a demonstration from James and Bob, with whom James has worked at many trial events. James has also represented England on several occasions, including at a world championship, and is a former Macclesfield Sheepdog Trials champion.
During the visit, David and Mr Gilman also reviewed plans for the Macclesfield Sheepdog Trials next month. As well as the impressive sheepdog displays, the event will feature the ever-popular tug-of-war, BBQ and Beer Tent, Craft Fayre and Tegg’s Nose Fell Race. The weekend will conclude with the traditional Sunday Concert, compered by Norman Prince, which will feature popular melodies and songs. Funds raised by the event will be donated to Macclesfield Sheepdog Trials' nominated local charities. These are: North West Air Ambulance Charity; British Heart Foundation; Ronald McDonald House; Rossendale Trust; and MacMillan East Cheshire Hospice. Speaking after his visit, David said, "It was great to meet with James and to learn more about the impressive skills that go into competing in sheepdog trials. I was also pleased to give my continued support for the Macclesfield Sheepdog Trials. They have rightly become a popular and regular fixture in the local calendar. Once again, there will be something for everyone and I encourage as many local residents as possible to visit over the weekend and support this rightly popular local event."
