Mydel Ladies Choir celebrated their 70th anniversary on 17th June, and were joined by David Rutley, MP for Macclesfield, for their celebratory concert.
To commemorate that significant milestone, the Choir hosted an Anniversary Concert, which took place at Macclesfield Methodist Church, and was attended by many Macclesfield residents and civic leaders, including the Mayor of Macclesfield, Cllr Beverly Dooley. The concert celebrated the Choir’s many achievements, and raised money for Space4Autism, a Macclesfield based charity which holds monthly parent support meetings, workshops and events. Space4Autism is also one of this year’s Mayoral Charities.
The Mydel Ladies Choir continues to thrive and attracts members of all ages, including 91 year old Mabel Harvey, an original member and current President of the Choir, who continues to be a much valued member of the alto section. Mabel joined her fellow Choir members for the celebratory performance, where her long service was warmly recognised.
The Choir was formed in 1947. Originally known as the Dormel Singers, the Choir quickly established itself as Macclesfield’s foremost ladies choir and, following many notable successes, became the Mydel Choir in 1970 after the retirement of its founder Dorothy Mellor. Speaking after the concert, David said: “It was an honour to attend the Mydel Ladies Choir 70th Anniversary Concert. The audience enjoyed the memorable performance, and were impressed by Mabel Harvey’s dedicated long service to the Choir. I wish the Choir, and its members, continued success in the decades ahead.”
