Local MP, David Rutley, and his family joined with the many people of Macclesfield who came together at Macclesfield Town Football Club on Sunday, for a charity football match, to raise funds for the victims of the tragic incident at Bosley in July.
More than 2,300 people attended the match, which is thought to have raised more than £30,000 for those affected by the explosion and their families. More than £100,000 has now been raised so far, and that amount continues to rise, with funds now being used to assist those who need them most.
A number of high profile names took to the field for the match, including former England midfielder Trevor Sinclair, Manchester City legends Shaun Goater and Paul Dickov, a number of former Macclesfield Town players, and familiar faces from television. The event was organised by local residents Darren Broomhead and Keith Innes, who also participated in the match, playing for Bosley United.
The match was Darren and Keith’s idea and they spent countless hours organising the event to make it the success it was. While Bosley United may have lost the match, the event was a real winner.
David Rutley said after the game, “It was great to be able to support this fantastic event for such a worthy cause. The people of Bosley and Macclesfield have done themselves proud in the weeks following this tragic incident, and this has been one of the clearest demonstrations of local support to those affected so far. I would like to thank Darren and Keith, who organised the match, Macclesfield Town Football Club, all of the volunteers, and the players, who gave up their time to play and spend time with the fans after the match.”
