Local MP, David Rutley, was on hand to support the inaugural Macclesfield pop up parade, taking place in the town centre on Saturday 20th June.
Following the decision to make the Barnaby Festival a biennial celebration, organisers decided to still hold a parade this year, in which anyone could turn up on the morning, and have three hours to make their own costume and items to carry in the parade, from scratch. Assistance was provided for the event by Macclesfield Community Artspace, who were in the Market Place running workshops, both outdoors and under cover. Materials were provided, and there was art, music and entertainment for all ages.
Whatever was made by 1pm was then carried or worn as the parade made its way through the pedestrianised area of the town centre. A samba band was on hand to provide an upbeat rhythm on the day. Support was also provided by a number of community groups, including Parachute, the drop-in centre for adults with learning difficulties and additional needs.
Speaking following the Parade, David said, “It was great to see the Barnaby tradition kept alive, ahead of the eagerly anticipated festival next year, and be able to take part in the parade. I was also really pleased to see Artspace doing such a good job, yet again, in the community to keep these traditions alive. I would like to thank everyone who took part, and made the event such a success.”
