Disley's well dressing ceremony once again showed the village’s strong community spirit, and local MP, David Rutley, was present to give his support to this much-loved local tradition at the Festival’s Sunday Service on 9th June.
At the well-attended service, the Festival was formally blessed by the Vicar of Disley, the Rev Stuart Cornes, who gave thanks on behalf of the local community for the gift of water. David then joined many local residents and visitors to view the impressive range of floral displays produced for this year’s Festival, with contributions from, among others, Disley Women's Institute, Little Wizards Pre-School, Disley Cuppa And A Chat, and St Mary's Church, where the Festival was kindly hosted.
David also took the opportunity on his visit to thank the village Well Dressing Committee, as well as Disley Parish Council and all the volunteers involved in organising the Festival, who were once again instrumental in making it such a success.
The Festival, which ran until 13th June, launched on Saturday 8th June. In addition to the colourful range of floral displays, there were a number of stalls selling locally-produced craft items throughout the afternoon. Music was kindly provided courtesy of the Poynton Swing Band.
Well Dressing is an ancient custom in towns and villages in the Peak District, where intricate artworks are created from flower petals and other natural materials, to give thanks for the gift of water.
Speaking after the event, David said, "It was an honour to once again attend this year's well-dressing and to see the impressive range of exhibits on display. As the number of quality displays shows, this event rightly remains a firm fixture in the local calendar, and I am grateful to the Well Dressing Committee, Disley Parish Council and all the volunteers involved in putting on such a great Festival, and to all the local residents who supported it."
