As Christmas trees are decorated, festive jumpers are dusted off and stockings are hung up, it is incredible to think we have already come to the end of another year.
Well attended events, such as the Christmas lights switch on in Macclesfield, school plays and cheery carol concerts, help demonstrate the strong sense of community that we are able to enjoy locally. Our values of freedom, tolerance and respect are very much alive - they are an antidote to the horror that we saw in Paris.
It is also good to see strong progress in our local economy. The recent announcement of a further investment of £75 million by AstraZeneca in its Macclesfield site is a real vote of confidence in the town. Nearby in Alderley Park, 500 people are now working at the BioHub, and many local businesses have a positive outlook for the future. There is more to do in regenerating Macclesfield town centre, but it is positive to see many parties expressing considerable interest in supporting an improved leisure offer.
But there have been real challenges too. The explosion in Bosley in July was a terrible tragedy, with four people losing their lives and the effects of the incident still being felt by the community today. However, the disaster also demonstrated the strength in our local communities. The response of the emergencies services, Bosley Parish Council, Cheshire East Council, community groups and many local residents in supporting those affected, was immediate and selfless. The Bosley Disaster Appeal has raised around £200,000 to date, and is actively being used to support those who need it most.
At this time of year, we should remember that response and seek to strengthen our communities and support those who are lonely or in need. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about opportunities or resolutions for the year ahead to consider putting their skills, experience and talents to good use in supporting our many active community groups.
We should also remember and express our thanks to those who continue to work tirelessly during the festive period, including our dedicated doctors and nurses, care workers, emergency services and brave service men and women, along with our hardworking postal workers.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all local residents a merry Christmas and every happiness in the year ahead.
