Alongside many local residents, Macclesfield Member of Parliament, David Rutley, has taken part in Macmillan Cancer Support’s Biggest Coffee Morning, to help raise funds for cancer patients and their families.
The well-attended event at Macclesfield and Bollington United Reform Church at Park Green was one of around 10 coffee mornings taking place at various locations across the Macclesfield constituency. As well as the delicious cakes and treats on offer, the coffee morning included various stalls (some selling home baking jams and preserves), a raffle, recycling facilities, cards, Fair Trade products, and others.
Macmillan Cancer Support has been promoting the Biggest Coffee Morning initiative from 1990, since when it has raised over £165.5 million for people facing cancer, helping to pay for nurses, equipment to help patients manage their conditions, and advice lines for cancer patients and their families. Last year alone, Macmillan Cancer Support raised £29.5 million, and this year it is aiming to raise even more. Speaking after the event, David said, “I am pleased to give my support to this excellent, well-established initiative, and would like to thank the volunteers at Macclesfield and Bollington United Reform Church, and all the other local events, for their hard work in organising these coffee mornings. There are now 2.5 million people in the UK living with cancer and, by 2030, it will be 4 million people. That is why it is so important that we continue to raise funds for those affected by cancer, and I am grateful to Macmillan Cancer Support for its work to this vital end.”
