David Rutley MP is acting on the concerns of the 800 strong Activity in Retirement (AIR) group regarding the future of Macclesfield’s Senior Citizens’ Hall.
David joined AIR at a well attended meeting to listen to concerns about where the group’s future activities would take place, given plans to redevelop Macclesfield town centre. The group has been using the Senior Citizens’ Hall for a number of years to put on activities, but the group will need to find a new home following the proposed Wilson Bowden scheme’s implementation.
David listened to concerns about the future location of AIR’s activities. Members are seeking assurances that any new building will have adequate parking and disabled access. The current venue on Duke Street has parking available and good disabled access, but members are worried that any new venue may not cater as well for them and come at a higher cost.
AIR has considered options explained to them that would be available following the development. Diana Hamilton, working for Cheshire East Council to consult on the proposal, was also on hand to address members’ concerns. It is understood that the former Butter Market and the old police station, part of the town hall’s footprint, would provide an agreeable alternative venue for AIR and other users of the Senior Citizens’ Hall.
David said, “It is great to see the work AIR does in the community to support so many older people. These services will become increasingly more important going forward given Cheshire East’s ageing population. It is essential that the concerns of AIR and other community groups are addressed as plans for the town centre are developed.”
