David Rutley, Macclesfield’s MP, has praised the work done by Macclesfield & Congleton District scouts, having joined the new Mayor of Macclesfield, Cllr Alift Harewood-Jones, at their well-attended Annual General Meeting.
The meeting outlined the progress which has been made over the last year across the scouting movement in and around Macclesfield. There are currently approximately 1,400 young people involved in scouting in the Macclesfield and Congleton District.
A highlight of the evening was the report from a number of young people who formed the District’s contingent to attend the World Scout Jamboree, which was held in Yamaguchi, Japan, last year. The Jamboree is an event held once every four years, which attracts Scouting organisations from across the world, to meet in a spirit of friendship and unity.
There was also news about the District’s recent celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the Cub Scouts. The main event was a Centenary Camp held at Capesthorne Hall in Siddington, with around 2,000 Cubs attending, taking part in traditional scouting activities and camping under canvas.
Macclesfield & Congleton District covers an area which stretches from Poynton to Congleton, with a District HQ located in Macclesfield and a District campsite at Barnswood near Rushton Spencer, in Staffordshire. There are a number of Scout groups in Macclesfield and across the district and new volunteers are always welcome. Further details on how to get involved, including as a volunteer, can be found at http://mcscouts.org.uk/.
Speaking following the meeting, David said, “It was great to learn about the recent work done in the District, including the World Jamboree last year, and also to see what plans the District has for the year ahead. Scouting is enjoying a high level of popularity at the moment, and we are fortunate to have such an active scouting movement locally, with waiting lists often in place. I would like to thank all the volunteers who give up their free time to support scouting, and look forward to keeping in touch with the District in the months ahead.”
