Our local communities

IMG_0073Since the general election, I have had the opportunity to find out more fully just how much impressive community work goes on in our towns and villages. Countless volunteers are involved and their work is a real inspiration.

In recent months, David Cameron has started to articulate his vision for the “Big Society” and what this stands for in our country. There are different ways of describing the strength that comes from vibrant local communities, but in the Macclesfield constituency there is clear evidence of a strong community spirit and, most encouragingly, the energy seems to be growing at a time when the economy continues to be challenging.

One of the most recent examples is the Treacle Market in Macclesfield. There has been much talk about the need to revitalise the Market Place. But after the success of the Barnaby Festival, Jane Munro and Debbie Quinn decided the time was right and made the market happen. All those who went were impressed by the number of visitors and the vibrant mood. Local shops benefitted from the increased trade and it is hoped that they will give greater support to the market in the future.

This strong sense of community is evident across our constituency. I have seen it alive and well at traditional Fetes in Wildboarclough, Wincle, Rainow, Pott Shrigley, Prestbury, Langley and Bollington.  It is wonderful to see young people proudly parade with the Rose Queens.

The recent, innovative Poynton Town Council Civic Awards highlighted the strong contributions made by so many in the village. The new youth awards showed the invaluable contribution that initiatives like Connect are making in keeping in touch with young people.

Similar community-led campaigns are working hard to save the Prestbury post office and get a viable community shop in Gawsworth. There has also been a very strong response from local residents and businesses to the consultation on Macclesfield town centre and to efforts to help strengthen the local economy.

There are many real, local challenges that need to be tackled. But as our communities work together, the prospect of finding better, more enduring outcomes will increase. Let’s continue to build on the growing momentum.
